Bikeli Atauro Community Boosts Local Economy Through Tourism and Marine Products

Bikeli, Atauro — The community of Bikeli Atauro is making remarkable progress in developing local tourism and sustainable livelihoods. With a total of 25 active members, the group continues to expand its initiatives in home stays, sea products, souvenirs, diving, and religious activities — showcasing the unique beauty and culture of Atauro Island.
Under the leadership of President Ps. Mateus Belo, the group has successfully established two home stay units to accommodate local and international visitors. These facilities aim to promote eco-friendly tourism while creating income opportunities for the community.
The group has also accumulated $2,350 in assets and initially received $1,000 in starting support, which has been instrumental in setting up their operations. Their workplace is now fully ready, thanks to generous support from the local church.
President Mateus Belo expressed gratitude to all partners and supporters, emphasizing that the initiative not only strengthens the local economy but also preserves Atauro’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
“We are committed to building a sustainable future for our community through tourism and marine conservation,” he said.
With ongoing support and collaboration, the Bikeli Atauro group hopes to continue growing as a model of community-based development and responsible tourism in Timor-Leste.
