Nukleu Cristo Rei Promotes Coastal Tourism and Culture in Metiaut

Metiaut, Dili — Overlooking one of Timor-Leste’s most iconic landmarks, the Nukleu Cristo Rei group in Metiaut is bringing new energy to local tourism. With 12 dedicated members, the group is working together to develop tourism activities that celebrate the beauty of the coast and the spirit of the Cristo Rei area.
Led by President Francisca Carlota Bareto, the group focuses on restaurant services, souvenir sales, diving experiences, and maintaining the Cristo Rei tourism site, a destination cherished by both pilgrims and visitors.
Starting with $1,000 in support, the group has successfully built its foundation and now manages $1,000 in assets. Their workplace is ready, and members are eager to welcome tourists with warm hospitality and local pride.
President Francisca Carlota Bareto emphasized that their goal is to balance tourism development with cultural and environmental respect:
“Cristo Rei is not only a place of beauty and prayer — it’s also a symbol of our identity. Through this initiative, we want to share it with the world while protecting what makes it special,” she said.
The Nukleu Cristo Rei group stands as a model of how small community teams can turn local landmarks into opportunities for sustainable tourism, empowering families and promoting Timor-Leste’s cultural heritage.
